The
best thing that has happened to our Guild in a very long time has been
the end of hostilities between East and West. This does not mean
there won't be disagreements. It does mean that now our energy (and
brains) can be totally devoted to fighting the studios and networks
instead of each other. And all our energy and brains will be
needed for the upcoming negotiations. None of our gains, from
health to pensions to minimums to any of the rights we now take for
granted, have been won without a fight. When I first joined the
Guild, our fight was simply against the studio and network heads.
Now it's against the conglomerates who own and control those
heads. They are powerful and dangerous and committed to only one
thing, the bottom line. They are also greedy and cowardly.
We have to be wary of the first and take advantage of the other.
I think we have the executive director and leadership that can do this
and I would like to continue being part of that fight.
